Moleaer's XTB Nanobubble Generator chosen to reduce operating costs and improve performance of brewer´s wastewater treatment system
Torrance, Calif. - March 26, 2018 - Moleaer Inc, manufacturer of highly efficient nanobubble generators for superior aeration in liquid-gas mixing applications, was selected by well-known beer brewer, Bear Republic, to enhance their existing membrane bioreactor (MBR) with the Moleaer XTB Nanobubble Generator. Bear Republic, headquartered in northern California, utilizes an anaerobicprocess combined with an MBR system to treat their wastewater. The Moleaer XTB was installed to improve the aeration efficiency of the MBR by delivering superior oxygen transfer through a stable reserve of oxygen enriched nanobubbles.
"What excited us was the simplicity and ease of retrofitting the Moleaer XTB into our existing system without affecting our operations. We can't afford any down time. Naturally, we were also eager to see what the unique properties of the nanobubbles might do for our MBR", said David Woychik, plant operator at Bear Republic. "Energy costs are quite high in Northern California and our MBR blowers account for more than 60% of our total energy usage. Moleaer recommended that we use pure oxygen as a feed gas for the XTB nanobubble generator to enhance the mass transfer, and it has proven to have a very positive impact on the performance of our system while still being cost-effective."
As in the case with Bear Republic, MBR systems are frequently utilized for their ability to treat high-strength wastewater streams in small footprints. The MBR enables them to process 12,000 mg/l mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS) at higher concentrations compared to conventional treatment, thus reducing the reactor volume to achieve the same loading rate. Unfortunately, such high MLSS levels in shallow tanks are difficult to oxygenate efficiently with conventional aeration. Consequently, operators will typically be forced to run a MBR with MLSS levels below the original design points.
Bear Republic's MBR system employs two 25hp blowers which proved inefficient at handling high-strength influent wastewater, creating an oxygen shortfall. As David Woychick explained, "After installing the 5 HP Moleaer system the improvement in the dissolved oxygen levels was immediate and consistently remained between 1.2 and 6ppm. The foaming also decreased dramatically and we reduced our usage of chemical defoamers, enabling us to achieve an attractive ROI with the Moleaer XTB system."
